Del Caribe Al Brazil
Del Caribe al Brazil is Atabal's first recording two years after the group was founded. Recently digitalized from it's original LP format and with three new recordings: Plena Aniversario, Prelude, partita#3 for violin (played on a Puerto Rican tiple) and Dundunbanza, Atabal demonstrates it's intent of using percussion as it's musical point of departure. The recording has as many variations of rhythms as it has of percussive instruments. The musical order intentionally begins in Puerto Rico traveling through Cuba, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Brazil. In Atabal's recordings, always expect Puerto Rican plena and bomba using the traditional percussion instruments: panderos, guiros, bomba drums, cua, and maraca, along side the cuatro (string instrument) trumpet, trombone, bass, guitar and flute. In this recording they also offer an a capella version of a Cuban guaracha: Me la Llevo where handclapping is the percussion instrument accompanying the voices. Throughout the group's 30 years, Atabal has traveled to Trinidad-Tobago, Nicaragua, Holland, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Venezuela and many US cities. In their concerts they always place Puerto Rico's plena and bomba rhythms first and later introduce their interpretations of other afro-Latin American music. It's the percussion that serves to attract and unify the public no matter what country they play in.
