My Gun Is Faster Than God's
ARMED WITH LEGS is clever. From their use of layering to their intelligent song structures, the music screams the word. Live loops fill up the sonic spectrum from top to bottom, the bass seamlessly changing from bass tone to brazen guitar tone (Jim Vermillion may do for bass what Tom Morello did for guitar). The vocals are reminiscent of Ben Gibbard; they whisper and float, telling you secrets. AWL creates a full unique sound as a duo, which would be hard to achieve with a four piece band. Think: ?uestlove sat in on a Sonic Youth session. The result is a multitude of simple intertwining melodic loops, with nice fat grooves. Abstract, interesting and effective, ARMED WITH LEGS proves to be a great up and coming Seattle band. Nobody does it quite like Armed with Legs. If I told you that there were only vocals, bass and drums on this EP you'd probably think I was stupid or lying. In the interest of full disclosure, I've been a fan of the guys from this band since seeing them play with The Kill Kill Orchestra back in 2006. Having seen them perform as Armed with Legs several times, I was a little worried that this new EP 'My Gun is Faster than God's' wouldn't properly capture their live sound. Well, I was wrong to worry. These two guys - yes, only two - have created a great introduction to their music with intriguing layers of controlled chaos in the vein of The Stooges or the harder side of King Crimson. Though only four tracks, 'My Gun is Faster than God's' starts like a downtown snowstorm with the title track and finishes like a spy novel with 'LubriCunt'. When I finish listening to this album I feel a strong desire to screw the silencer onto my pistol and drive the Bently to Nice. I usually settle for a second listen. Don't be fooled, the counter rhythms and eerie, whispered melodies that these guys have carefully composed are not studio tricks, and are accurately - though not easily - recreated on stage. My preferred way to listen to Armed with Legs is live with a beer my hand, but 'My Gun is Faster than God's' is an excellent alternative. -Colin Isler of Post Harbor, The Washover Fans, Bearhead Studios Armed With Legs [is] a band whose name is unabashed in it's ability to rule. They're a two man group that experiments a lot within those confines and manages to keep it interesting the entire time. Nick Krivchenia absolutely murders on the drums and Jim Vermillion is credited on myspace as playing bass and being in charge of the vocals but it becomes clear very quickly that he's in charge of much more. Armed with Legs is a Seattle band not to be missed. -Seattle Show Gal.
