Not Like You
Allison Cipris (pronounced Cy-Press) grew up on stage. She started performing at a young age in musical theater, but knew early on as she sang along to her Pretenders and Joan Jett records, that her rock and roll heart could not be tamed, as indicated by this impressive debut album. After spending a couple of years developing her chops and stage presence as a session and backing vocalist in the U.S. and abroad with everyone from Cy Coleman to Richie Sambora, Allison got tired of singing for other people and wound up back home in New York City determined to devote all of her time and energy to her own music. During the past couple of years, Allison has emerged on her own as a gifted songwriter and powerhouse performer. Her dynamic voice sets her apart from other female singers in the genre; she can fill a room with it's raw power, or break your heart with it's bittersweet intimacy. Allison has quickly become one of the more recognized female rock performers on the indie scene, playing to enthusiastic crowds around the North East region. When Cipris sings, people take notice and listen. Allison's full-length debut album, Not Like You, is chock full of radio-ready tunes with just the right amount of grit around the edges. From the pissed-off, woman-scorned anthem 'Break' (featured on the soundtrack of Pheremone Films' 2005 release, Unearthed ), to the cry-in-your-beer, country-tinged ballad 'Leavin'' (included on UMO Music's Best NYC Singer/Songwriters, Vol. 1), to the slightly disturbing tale of urban heartbreak that is 'Hardest Fall' (2004 Billboard Magazine Songwriting Contest -Pop category), Not Like You showcases Allison's ability to craft catchy songs with big hooks and memorable melodies, and infuse them with her passion and personality. Check out the buzz on Not Like You : ' Cipris's voice has pop appeal and a no nonsense edge that nicely complements her band's solid rock.' -Time Out New York 'Allison Cipris may be relatively new to 'the scene' but she delivers the rock gospel with the conviction of a veteran rock star. Her strong vocal presence captures you right from the get go on her band's debut CD, 'Not Like You' - but it's the album's diversity, as well as it's anthemic swagger that will undoubtedly keep you coming back for more.' -Mark Fisher, 1340 Magazine ' This is not the kind of music with which to settle back over a latte and have a conversation. Ms. Cipris rocks!' -Princeton Packet.
