INTERVIEW Between ROB MILHOUSE and Alliance's front man JOEY POLIDORI: ROB MILHOUSE: Tell me about your album. What inspired you to write such impressive music? JOEY: I've had the honor of learning from some of the most intense metal bands of all time. Also, being displeased with modern rock/metal radio, it inspires me to write. Much of what has become popular metal has portrayed a 'Drop D', 'Self-Loathing' screaming contest type of image. Usually void of any musical intricacy or progressive melodic architecture. Their are exceptions to the rule as always and I see a healthy rock/metal scene rising. I will only write songs that I would love to listen to...but 'to each his own'. Since my standards for listening are high...then my standards for writing are even higher. ROB: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before? JOEY: Uhhh...that's a good one Rob. Probably as 'your next favorite album'. Ha ha, ya gotta be bold. Ya gotta be confident. They can decide if they like it or not once they hear it. All I gotta do is get them to listen. ROB: Despite Alliance's 'cult-like' following, most of the album is not considered 'radio friendly' due to the lengthy and progressive nature of some of the songs. Do you plan on writing songs that fit more of a 'Hit' format? JOEY: Absolutely not. I do not set out to create a song to fit any particular format. Song formatting is determined by the subject matter and musical content. Songs are created to tell a story, to capture human emotion. The song is not finished unless the story is over and the emotion has been captured. If that spawns a 10 minute epic...then so be it. I would never purposely try to write a hit song. Ya can't force it, ya gotta feel it. ROB: What band would you give the most credit to for influencing you? JOEY: Aw man, just one band? Can I make it like...three? ROB: Sure, why not. What three bands then? JOEY: Ok, I'll put them in order for ya. It would have to be... Metallica, Dream Theater & Megadeth. That's some of the most impressive music and song writing ever in my opinion. ROB: Well, with Metallica being your biggest influence, how do you feel about their newer stuff? JOEY: Ahh ha ha... geez that's like the biggest metal controversy in the current day. Uh, I'll humor you for this question only. Well, any band that can continuously write whatever they want and change their sound album after album while staying on top for almost 30 years...well...let's just say they own my respect. I listen to everything they do...uh...except 'Turn the Page'...ha ha yeah, don't like that one. ROB: Ok, how did Alliance form? JOEY: The long version or the short? ROB: Let's do the short for now. JOEY: Well, after my last band (Militia) broke up, I really didn't wanna audition musicians in the traditional manor. Ya know, placing an add and having all sorts of musicians try out who don't qualify. So I recorded a few songs and marketed them to attract musicians who had the chops to play what I recorded...and that's exactly how it happened. Brian Regalado (Drummer) became an instant fan and promoter once he heard it. It took us a year to connect, but when we did, the two of us practiced for months by ourselves. Then Brian called in friend Dave Gillies (Lead Guitar) to join a practice. Dave tackled the material quickly. I was just blown away with both of their skill. So uh, here we are. Too short? Ha ha. ROB: Ha ha, no, no, no, Just right Joey. So you guys have a new album out right now and have show offers come in, are you a little nervous not having a bassist? JOEY: Well yeah, of course. I mean, ya wanna be ready in case a good offer hits the table. However, I have great faith the new album will attract a bassist that fits very quickly. I strongly believe we will not suffer because of this. In fact, I know it. We are moving forward very fast and the three of us are putting all of our energy into securing the future of Alliance. ROB: Well, Joey it was a pleasure spending this short time with you, congratulations on the release of 'Stand in my Way' and hopefully we'll be able to do it again in the future and do the 'long version'. Ha ha. JOEY: I'd enjoy that Rob. Thank you.
