Product notities

Elizabeth Joy Zarek and Jonathan Brinkley first sang together, with the serendipitous blessing of Portland, Oregon, in the spring of 2004. Jonathan, the street performer, had just moved from Ft. Worth, Texas, rootless and seeking a new life. Elizabeth was then playing congas for a local folk rock band, and she did not count singing among her particular talents. She does now. On the opening weekend of Portland's yearly, open-air Saturday Market, Jonathan played his songs and covers for the strangers of his new home. Among these was a young eccentric, the sort of man who is amusing up to a point, and that point comes quickly. He sang along to songs he didn't know, off key. He clapped his hands, out of rhythm, to soulful ballads. Jonathan's chances of gathering much in the way of tips seemed grim. Just as he was about to risk a full-on scene by asking the stranger to leave, they both noticed a radiant woman striding confidently along the opposite sidewalk. "Hey dude, you think I can get that girl to come over here?" the stranger said. Jonathan cringed. Elizabeth was in a spirited mood. Having just purchased some chimes and a pair of bongos, she left the music store with a sense of possibility and purpose. The world of drums was opening up, and she felt like a rock star. As she walked along, planning for the musical richness that awaited her, she was not all that surprised when an exuberant man standing next to a guitarist shouted an odd greeting. "Hey! You're walking on the wrong side of the street!" Elizabeth didn't skip a beat. "You guys need a drummer?" she said as she crossed over to them. It was not the response Jonathan had expected. He was preparing to be mortified, but he rolled with it. "Yeah, we could be a whole band." he said. Elizabeth pulled the new bongos from a duffle bag. As they played Jonathan's cover of "For What It's Worth" by Stephen Stills, their eccentric friend fell blessedly silent. Jonathan was impressed by Elizabeth's drumming, but at one point she put the bongos down and began singing harmony on the chorus. The seamless blend of their two voices established itself right there on the sidewalk, and never left. Elizabeth did, though, after a couple of songs. They didn't exchange numbers. They didn't quite know what had happened. But they felt it. Hours later, when Jonathan was boarding the light rail train back to the suburbs, Elizabeth was there. It was the first of many seemingly random reconnections the two would share. Their intimate journey since then has seen many different incarnations, always bringing them closer as it's made them stronger, both personally and musically. A commitment to honesty and openness drives their relationship, informs every aspect of their songwriting, and inspires them to bring others into the mix. Portland teaches you to believe in something more than "coincidence" and to plan for the extraordinary. By keeping their eyes open, they allowed themselves to happen upon beauty. They also noticed that it was inside them, and all around them. They officially created the group name All Day Lovers in the spring of 2007. They are celebrating the release of their first record, "Sounds of You", one year later, on April 2, 2008.
