American born father and daughter blend West and East and contemporary with traditional in this unique CD. Alice beautifully sings in both traditional and modern style twelve popular Chinese folk songs written within the last century in perfectly accented standard mandarin. Wonderfully recomposed, Jerry brings out the true feeling of these undying classics into clear heartfelt melody with modern and traditional Chinese orchestration as well as his 12 string guitar. Singing and composing along with the help of wife and mother Wen-Fen playing the Chinese Zither (GuZheng) and the accompaniment of a pianist friend and Alice's cello playing cousin, this CD brings back forgotten memories of the past in an enjoyable new way. This CD is in memory of my mother in-law, Chien Shu Tsu Fan. Before I met my wife Wendy I had always enjoyed learning about different cultures and languages. Since I was a young boy I also very much enjoyed music, in particular, playing guitar and singing. At the time we were engaged, I asked Wendy to teach me a Chinese song that she and her mother liked so that I could make a kind of bond with her mother. She taught me Xiao Cheng Gu Shi. My singing that for my mother in-law accompanied by my guitar was a great success as I learned she also liked to sing and had some talent for it. Although I learned to speak a lot more Chinese in the years that followed, I found out that mother had a strong accent which I had some trouble understanding. However, we always enjoyed singing Chinese songs to and with one another. That was how we communicated. At the time of her eightieth birthday, our family went to Taiwan for a celebration. I prepared a simple concert of Chinese songs as a gift to mother and her guests. The performance brought joy to all of them. Years later mother began to develop Alzheimers and needed special care. I could not go with Wendy to Taiwan because of work but to comfort her, I recorded six Chinese songs that we liked to sing along with a brief greeting in Chinese to wish her well. Sadly she passed away September of 2008. However, the CD I made lived on, and relatives and friends encouraged me to improve and develop it. My daughter Alice inherited my love of music and singing and had taken Chinese language classes in junior high and high school. One year we sang Wan Wan de Yue Liang for a Chinese New Year Celebration at her Chinese school. It became a hit. Encouraged by a musician friend of mine, Alice took voice lessons for one year. Her singing would become the central attraction of this CD. Much learning and work has gone into making this CD. These songs bring back happy memories with my mother in-law, and we hope they will also bring you happy memories of forgotten days. Jerry Mueckl.
