As a young child, Alex Williams would attend his Washington, DC church and sleep in his mother's lap, waking only to hear the choir sing. And though he now understands the importance of sound Biblical teaching and study, music remains the vehicle by which Alex experiences some of his most intimate moments with God. His ministry of songwriting and leading worship may seem like a no-brainer, but the journey has been anything but simple. Alex taught himself to play the piano by ear at an early age. Recognizing his talent, Alex's mother encouraged him join his church's youth choir, where he eventually served as the pianist. At the age of 19, Alex suffered the sudden and devastating loss of his mother. In that dark time, when words couldn't convey his pain and tears couldn't wash it away, faith and music comforted Alex. The music that God gave him could mend broken hearts, encourage souls in despair, and change lives through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, starting with his own. He began writing songs consistently, often sharing them in his capacity as a worship leader at several DC-area churches. In 2007, God opened the door for Alex to lead worship at the Going Beyond conferences sponsored by LifeWay. 'Alex Williams' skill, gifting and passion for worship seems to light a holy fire deep within every believer that hears his music,' says Priscilla Shirer, national speaker and founder of Going Beyond Ministries. Today, Alex's passion is wondrously fulfilled in his role as Worship Leader at The Bridge in Downtown Silver Spring, MD, under the leadership of Pastor Jumaine Jones. The budding church, dubbed 'A Church for Imperfect People,' presents a refreshingly radical approach to living a Christian life, bridging the gap between Church and Culture. 'I love the multicultural, multigenerational worship environments,' Alex says. 'I seek to connect with people of all different backgrounds. In Heaven, worship will have no prejudices.' Despite an increasingly busy schedule, Alex still manages to carve out time to focus on his songwriting. Most recently, his songs can be heard on 'An Invitation to Worship,' the sophomore release of national recording artist Byron Cage (Zomba Gospel), for which Alex wrote the popular worship track 'Invitation' and the energy-filled 'Rain on Me.' As he is being led through new terrain, Alex is humbled by the honor to serve God's people. 'I'm blessed to be surrounded by awesome singers and musicians who share the same passion,' he says. 'I'm overwhelmed that God chose me to lead his people in worship.'
