8HEAD is a story of determination. The band is an obsession of Dave Moore and Ethan Piper -- two passionate musicians stubborn enough to pursue music without a band, a record deal or a snowball's chance in hell of ever being heard. Based in New York City, Ethan and Dave grew frustrated with the scene. They'd been playing together since 1988 and took multiple swings at the NYC rock scene in the mid-90s. Positive that the music industry was undergoing a major restructuring, they decided to break their sound outside of the usual channels. In late 2000, Ethan and Dave committed themselves to compile an album's worth of material, rehearse it, record it, produce it and promote it locally and on the Web. At the time, both Ethan and Dave were full-time, corporate chumps with very little free time to tackle this mammoth project. Also, they were only a drum and guitar combo, with one great singer (Ethan) and one fledging, out-of-tune crooner (Dave). The pickings were slim, but the boys didn't care, they knew they had something. After spending months in pre-production rehearsals, Ethan and Dave hit the studio to capture a stripped-down, acoustic version of their best material. Although electric rockers at heart, they pursued acoustic arrangements because they planned to play out as a duo (shown feasible band alternatives by the White Stripes and Local H) and a trio or foursome when they gained some momentum. Most importantly, the lads thought if the songs rocked acoustically, how great would they sound with electric guitars and bass? Felix Chen, who played on the band's 1999 demo eventually popped again -- this time to record the necessary bass lines for the project -- all in one day! Armed with the 1999 demo and all new tracks, 8HEAD and producer Craig Randall buckled down, mixed and mastered the new acoustic tracks -- and carefully blended some of the band's heavier and dirtier works. The final product was delightful for everyone. Zoom in. 2002. 8HEAD spawns Noize Merchant Records after a very successful test of their song Ground Zero on the soon to be re-opened mp3.com. In one week, 8HEAD generated over 4000 hits with fan mail coming on from as far as Japan and Brazil. Fast forward to today. The 8HEAD CD is produced, packaged and ready to go.
